Article history: Received 28.3.2013 Received in revised form 26.4.2013 Accepted 29.4.2013 Aluminum matrix composites containing 55% SiC particle reinforcing phase/SiC reinforcement phase particle and Kovar alloy 4J29 were chosen as the base metals. After nickel plating on the surface of SiCp/Al, two kinds of materials were soldered together by using Zn-Cd-Ag-Cu as the filler metal and ZnCl2 as the flux at the temperature of 420 °C in an argon atmosphere for 5 minutes. The interfacial microstructures and fracture surfaces were investigated with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The result shows that the electroplating nickel on the surface of SiCp/Al can improve the weldability of fillers in the composites. There are transition layers not only between the filler and Kovar alloy, but also between the filler metal and nickel layer, which shows that the filler metal, the nickel layer, the composites and Kovar alloy can be joined by the diffusion mechanism. The fracture analysis shows that the fracture is mainly located at the side of composites near the electroplating nickel layer.

Optimization of SiC particle distribution during compocasting of A356-SiCp composites using D-optimal experiment design
This paper presents an experimental design approach to the process parameter optimization for compocasting of A356-SiCp composites. Toward this end, parameters of stirring temperature, stirring time, stirring speed and SiC content were chosen and three levels of these parameters were considered. The D-optimal design of experiment (DODE) was employed for experimental design and analysis of resul...
متن کاملExperimental study of fracture mechanics in the aluminum matrix composites containing Fifteen percent silicon carbide particles
In this investigation ‚the fracture toughness of A356 containing15%SiC composite was studied. Al/SiC composites have been considered because of their mechanical and erosion properties .Low fracture toughness in Al/SiC as compared with Aluminium alloys is one of its disadvantage. In this study at first A356 alloy was melted in a smelting electrical furnace then poured into the mould. A356-15% Si...

The present paper aims to investigate the solidification behavior and the forgeability of Aluminum alloy (LM6)-SiCp composites at different section of three-stepped composite castings. The temperature of the cast composites during solidification has measured by putting K-type thermocouples at the center of the each step/section, from which the solidification curves were constructed. The forgeab...
متن کاملImproving of Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Al-A356 Alloy with Compo-Casting Method
Aluminum/alumina composites are used in automotive and aerospace industries due to their low density and good mechanical strength. In this research, the effect of mechanical stirring of slurry in liquid-solid phase temperature and injection of alumina powder with inert gas (Ar) on microstructure and mechanical properties of Al-A356 alloy is investigated. In order to improve of the wettability a...

Investigation was to study the influence of pulse-impact on microstructure of Liquid-Phase-Pulse-Impact Diffusion Welding (LPPIDW) welded joints of aluminum matrix composite SiCp/A356, SiCp/6061Al, Al2O3p/6061Al. Results showed that under the effect of pulse-impact: 1) the interface state between reinforcement particle (SiC, Al2O3) and matrix was prominently; 2) the initial pernicious contact-s...
